Meet Dr. Justin Lai (DDS)

Edge Dental Emergency is led by Dr. Justin Lai (DDS), one of the leading emergency dentists in Houston, TX. He has a stellar educational background, having completed his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. However, he believes in ongoing education and attends regular workshops and conferences to stay abreast of the latest developments in dentistry. He’s also incredibly compassionate and ensures his patients feel comfortable under his care.

What is Your Dental Emergency?

Edge Dental Emergency sees patients for a wide range of dental emergencies and non-emergencies. However, most patients struggle to distinguish between dental emergencies needing immediate attention and non-emergencies that can wait for regular dental clinic hours. That’s understandable because a lot of dental emergencies may seem benign on the surface, and a lot of non-emergencies can externally seem like emergencies. Below, we highlight some of the most common dental emergencies and how they’re handled.

Impacted wisdom teeth are third molars that erupt improperly, push against the surrounding teeth, or remain trapped within the jawbone. They can cause severe toothaches and complications, such as infections. Wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most common dental emergencies, and it involves removing impacted wisdom teeth.

Dental crowns are used for numerous purposes, such as correcting large cavities, protecting weakened teeth after root canals, covering discoloration, and replacing missing teeth (with dental implants). If your dental crown is damaged, you should contact an emergency dentist to receive another crown as soon as possible. Leaving a cavity without a crown increases the risk of infections.

If you have a lost filling, your cavity is probably wide open for bacterial infections. In some cases, lost fillings are also indications of dental infections under the filling. You must contact an emergency dentist to determine if you have an ongoing bacterial infection and replace the lost filling. This will protect your teeth and minimize the risk of needing root canals.

If your tooth is broken or cracked, you may or may not have a dental emergency. Craze lines or superficial cracks can be treated with bonding and dental fillings. However, if the dental crack goes to the pulp chamber, you’ll need a root canal. And if the dental crack goes under the gum line, you’ll need an emergency dental extraction. Please contact your emergency dentist.

Gum pain, swelling, and bleeding are common symptoms of dental abscesses. You can get a dental abscess if you leave a cavity untreated, which makes bacteria accumulate in the pulp chamber and lead to pus-filled cysts. The dentist will have to drain the abscess, followed by an emergency root canal or emergency dental extraction.

If you have a knocked-out tooth, you must visit the emergency dentist as soon as possible, i.e., ideally within an hour. If the knocked-out tooth is still healthy and the nerves are intact, the dentist can reattach the tooth. But if the tooth has been mishandled or you waited too long, you may need to consider teeth replacement options, such as a dental bridge or implant.

Our Goal: Saving Your Teeth

Our Goal: Saving Your Teeth

Edge Dental Emergency aims to save your teeth. That might sound like an obvious statement, but it’s not. Most emergency dentists focus on instant pain relief and emergency dental extractions. They rarely conduct the thorough assessments necessary to identify alternative solutions. However, our emergency dentist always performs thorough diagnostic tests to identify the least invasive means of resolving the dental emergency. Of course, in some cases, emergency dental extractions are unavoidable, but that’s always our last resort.

Cutting-Edge Technologies

West Houston Dental Clinic

Dental technologies grow and advance at a breakneck pace. Treatment modalities that may have been deemed cutting-edge a few years ago might now be considered obsolete. The only way to stay at the top of your game in such an exponentially changing field is to commit to embracing technological advancements. Dr. Lai certainly has a strong foundation in dental work, but he ensures his clinic is always outfitted with the latest technologies available, including 3D digital x-rays, intra-oral scanners, LANAP lasers, and CAD/ CAM (computer-assisted design/computer-aided manufacturing) technology.
